EKA is a strong believer of equal treatment among students and staff and ensures a protective work environment for them all. According to the Code of Ethics of the Estonian Academy of Arts clause 5.2 a member of EKA shall “treat fellow citizens with respect, and without prejudice to race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical and mental abilities and other attributes”, which also fits with the new building as it is projected with the handicapped in mind, providing them access to every room on campus.

The ground floor takes into account the height of the surroundings, providing step-free access to the building from the side of Kotzebue street and the courtyard; the main entrance has a slope for access. From the ground floor people in need can use elevators, which rise up until rooftop balconies. The motion of elevators are accompanied by voice announcements of the arriving floor and the open and close of elevator doors. In addition the buttons in the elevator are covered in Braille writing. The building also has specially equipped toilets for handicapped people, which are located on the 1st, 3rd and 5th floor. In addition, all stairs, halls and balconies are surrounded by railings, which are set on special height to offer support for people in need. In case a car is used for a ride to the campus, a specified parking spot at the EKA parking lot is applicable for the disabled student.

The International Office together with the EKA’s psychological counsellor are working closely to ensure that those exchange students with disabilities receive help and guidance while studying at EKA. Each student will be approached individually, on a case-by-case basis and exact instructions are given based on the students specific needs. For a better overview on how EKA can support you with your specific case, we kindly ask you to contact our psychological counsellor Kaia-Leena Pino (kaialeena.pino@artun.ee). In case of more exchange studies and admissions related questions, please feel free to get in touch with the International Office (international@artun).
